Guide for International Students

Like the city itself, this university – named after Wilhelm von Humboldt, a great scholar and reformer of education – has a great deal of exciting things to offer, but you need to give yourself time to navigate it. To start, we recommend all students to take the English-speaking course ‘Berlin Perspectives’. More information on this course is here

For detailed questions on Berlin Perspectives, please contact their team, either via berlinperspectives@hu-berlin.de

Or get in touch with Dr Julia Effertz, at julia.effertz@hu-berlin.de

The other choices (i.e. the remaining 40 or 100 credits) depend on your interests and the availability in a given year. To search for specific courses, you need to know that History [Geschichte] is subordinated to the Faculty of Philosophy in Berlin. It is further subdivided by period, Alte [Ancient]. Neuere [early modern] and Neueste [modern and contemporary]. Please note: to satisfy Sheffield criteria, at least one of your courses must be from the pre-modern period.

A selection of courses is available here.

Note: If you want to enroll in courses in English only, your choices will be more restricted.

For specific questions, please contact the Humboldt Erasmus team by getting in touch with Maria Butzke at erasmus.geschichte@hu-berlin.de

Sciences Po Lyon

Lyon is a medium-sized French city in an ideal location in the south of France, 1.5 h from the Mediterranean and a similar distance from the Alps. The University, Sciences Po, is one of the most renowned institutions in the country. It was founded by Napoleon and today attracts up to 2,000 students pursing interdisciplinary degrees in History, Politics and the social sciences. Please note, however, that there are no courses offered in the history of Antiquity and the Middle Ages. This exchange is particularly recommended for Dualists in History and Politics.

Eberhard Karl University Tübingen

If you are looking for a programme in English only, we recommend International and European Studies, an interdisciplinary programme which exists in different formats (from 6 weeks to 3 months). However, please note that the costs for this programme are higher than a regular Erasmus year abroad (even though discounts are available for Sheffield students). To discuss the financial implications, please get in touch.

For details of the programme, you can also get in touch with Mrs Franziska Krausse at

franziska.krausse@uni-tuebingen.de

For the regular programme of study

Please note that the Department of History in Tübingen is subordinated tot he Faculty of Philosophy. History [Geschichte] is then further subdivided into Antike [Antiquity], Mittelalter [Middle Ages], Neuzeit [early modern and modern period] and Neuere und Neueste [modern and contemporary]. You will note that most lectures in Tübingen (with the exception of the above-mentioned programme in International and European Studies) are in German

Utrecht is the largest university in Holland, and ranks first in the country and 16th in the world. It also offers over 200 courses in English. The university is in the heart of a very picturesque and lively student city, and History occupies one of the central old buildings on a canal. The university library is located in the former bedroom of King Louis Bonaparte (Napoleon’s brother).
